CULTURE TEN - 1st December 2003 SAMA ROOTS CHART
1. Bushman - Healing Of The Nation - (Calvin & Errol - UK 7")

Supplied by Sama Roots Sound System from Sheffield 20/12/2003. Contact waq@yellowarch.com

"Modern vampires come outa mi life!" says Bushman on this herb anthem from a brand new British label. It's got the bass heavy sound and effects to appeal to the UK dub systems, but it's Bushman's vocal that really lifts this tune above others.
2. Chezidek - One Perfect Love/ Turbulence - Show Some Love - (Kariang - JA7")
Kariang are better known for more rootsy productions, notably with Garnett Silk and Sizzla. This production of the two Xterminator artists has a dancehall feel. There is also some connection with an Israeli hip-hop band as the rhythm, called Rocky 2003, is produced by Piloni & Kirk.

1.Love Is What We Need -Twilight Circus feat. Big Youth

2. Dem Man Deh -Morgan Heritage

3. Ah Mankind -Sandeeno

4. What Di Youts Dem Want -Chukki Starr

5. Peace -Sizzla

3. Admiral Tibet - Valley Of Division - (Addis - Switz 7")
Addis releases used to be dominated by Swiss band Restless Mashaits. This rhythm is called Frontline and is the second to feature several vocalists. "What kind a mission Babylon deh pon?" asks the Admiral on the choice cut.
4. Jah Mason -No Joke -(Jah Warrior -UK7")
'This ain't no joke, something we got to talk about" says Mason and this will definitely be taken seriously by UK dub soundmen who are still playing his last collaboration with Jah Warrior hard. Rainbow Circle Throne has been the biggest tune of the year on the UK roots scene; watch this one go.
5. Chezidek -Uprising -(World A Muzik -JA7")
On the Pressure rhythm produced by Barry O'Hare. Don't miss the Capleton piece either. "Itıs a new day, no time to sleep" says Chezidek whoıs been busy fulfilling the potential shown on his Xterminator album.
6. Tony Curtis -Crabs In A Barrel -(John John -JA7")
The sweet voice of Tony Curtis is featured on the Ngozi rhythm which really offers something different. It was produced by King Jammy's son Lloyd 'John John' James and built by Ward 21.
7. Bushman -Jah Deliver Me -(John John -JA7")
Ngozi has no bassline as such, but it's still well dread. Bushman is on fire at the moment and sounds good on any kind of a rhythm he tackles.
8. Sizzla -I Was Born -(Baby G -JA 7")
Produced by Trevor 'Baby G' James who is King Jammyıs nephew and one of the young producers who are cutting their teeth on innovative dancehall rhythms and then showing that they can carry roots music forward as well. Itıs a slow mellow track with hand drumming and a vocal performance thatıs vintage Sizzla, except for the entertaining way he curses ³I was born in a system that doesnıt give a fuck about me or you."
9. Sizzla -World Wide Love -(Reggae Central -JA7")
Spelt as 'word wide' on the label, this is actually the b-side to Hosanna and for that reason some people might have missed it. It's a bass heavy, live sound with Kalonji chanting "Rastafari works no take it fe commercial". As good as anything heıs done. Essential.
10. Jahmali -Give Thanks And Praises -(Cali Bud -JA7")
We don't hear enough from Jahmali. The rhythm's called Stress and has a live sound to it. Jah Shaka played this in Southall the same week it arrived in the shops and it sounded awesome. Gwaan Shaka!!
